Situated in the North-East of England, Durham sits on the River Wear, to the south of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and north of Darlington. The city is famous for its Norman cathedral and the 11th-century castle – both of which were inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1986. Durham Cathedral is famous for being the burial site of Saint Cuthbert as well as Saint Bede the Venerable.

The whole of the city centre is designated a conservation area. Along with the Cathedral and Castle, Durham has more than 630 listed buildings, with 569 of them situated within the city centre conservation area.

As well as having a rich and fascinating history, Durham is also well-known for its university. Durham University isn’t just the third-oldest in England after Oxford and Cambridge but is also considered one of the best in the world, with a global reputation for excellence.
