Situated in the North-East of England, Durham sits on the River Wear, to the south of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and north of Darlington. The city is famous for its Norman cathedral and the 11th-century castle – both of which were inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1986.
