Wakefield is a cathedral city in the country of West Yorkshire. Nine miles south of Leeds, it is situated on the River Calder on the edge of the Pennines. One of the most famous landmarks here is Wakefield Cathedral. Standing at 247 feet, it has the tallest spire in Yorkshire.
Wakefield is most famous for its cold mining heritage. The city was one of the country’s largest producers of coal during the 19th century and it is now home to the National Coal Mining Museum for England – one of the area’s biggest attractions. Other places of interest for visitors include the ruins of Sandal Castle overlooking Pugneys Country Park.
Whilst the city’s economy declined at the end of the 20th century due to the closing of the coal mines and other traditional manufacturing industries, it has become a popular place to do business in recent years, with the city now having one of the fastest-growing economies in the UK.
