Sheffield is in South Yorkshire, at the foot of the Pennines and within the Peak District National Park. The city’s unique location ensures that 61% of it is green space, with as many as 250 parks, gardens, and woodlands boasting a staggering 4.5 million trees. Sheffield had a population of 518,090 in the 2011 census, making it the second biggest city in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
Sheffield played a key role in the Industrial Revolution, responsible for many major inventions and technologies. The city expanded its cutlery trade throughout the 19th century, developing both stainless steel and crucible steel locally. Once considered one of the country’s industrial powerhouses, it is now a shining star in the UK’s arts and culture scene. Many of its once-thriving factories and foundries have now been turned into galleries, museums, and theatres.
Sheffield has experienced major redevelopment throughout the 21st century, helping its economy to grow steadily and more so than the Yorkshire region as a whole.
